About the Artist:
Tanusree Shankar is one of the leading dancers and choreographers of contemporary dance in India and is based in Kolkata, India. She earned her fame as a danseuse as the leading dancer of the Ananda Shankar Centre for Performing Arts in the 1970s and 1980s.Tanusree Shankar was born in Calcutta. Her husband, the late Ananda Shankar, was a world famous music composer who experimented with fusion music. He was the son of world famous dancers, Pandit Uday Shankar & Amala Shankar, and also the nephew of the sitar maestro Ravi Shankar Tanusree Shankar now leads the Tanusree Shankar Dance Company, one of the leading exponents of contemporary dance forms in India. She has evolved her own modern idiom by marrying the grace and beauty of traditional Indian dances with the soul of modern western ballet expressions. She has been inspired both by her illustrious lineage as much by the folk and regional dance forms of India. Her late father-in-law the legendary Uday Shankar is regarded as a pioneer of modern Indian Dance who performed with such ballet greats as Anna Pavlova. She has also drawn extensively from rich local Indian traditions such as the Thang-ta or Manipuri Sword dance. She travels with her troupe extensively around the world. Her last notable productions include "Uttaran",Upliftment of the soul; and "Chirantan",The eternal, based on Rabindranath Tagore's music.
About the Performance:
The world today is going through tremendous turmoil - war, fear, hatred and terror lurk at us from every corner. A constant tussle between the good and evil sees an apparent victory of the darker forces - all created by God's most superior creation, Man. In our moments of deep despair and hopelessness, we look up to the sky, the abode of all deities, for inspiration, direction and a new awakening. The heaven is a symbol of love, peace and harmony. The sky encompasses Mother Earth sheltering and protecting her from the harsher elements beyond. It symbolizes eternal peace and love which percolates down to us in myriad forms and manner - Nature's love for mankind, man's love for his fellow beings, a mother's love for her child, love for one's country and free living, man's love for the lesser beings and above all, love for God. Love is universal. Gurudev has immortalized love through his poems, songs and various writings. He has enumerated the virtues of peaceful living and has inspired us to scale new heights. His writings have provided us with solace at our dark moments. Today, we present excerpts from his vast repertoire of works to reinforce man's belief in his own self, in truth, love, peace and spirituality. Through this ballet, we present to you the emergence of a peaceful dawn of an era where love triumphs over hatred and the world embody a haven of hope, goodness and tranquility. The glories of God show us the path for harmonized and tolerant living. In our search for truth and peace, our mind should be free from the shackles of fear and we should be courageous enough to overcome all obstacles that try to hinder progress.
